Summer Hair Care Tips You’ll Actually Want to Follow

Sun, saltwater, chlorine, cute pool days… we love it all. But guess what? Your hair doesn’t.

Summer is basically a full-time job for your strands — fighting off UV damage, dehydration, salt buildup, and chlorine exposure. If you want to keep your hair healthy, shiny, and beautiful all summer long, here’s what you need to know:

1. Condition First, Swim Later

Before you dive into the ocean or the pool, soak your hair with fresh water and apply a light layer of conditioner.

Why? Because hair acts like a sponge — and if it’s already full of good moisture (aka conditioner), it’s less likely to absorb the bad stuff like chlorine, salt, or pool chemicals that can dry it out and damage it.

Pro tip: Keep a travel size leave-in conditioner bottle in your beach bag.

2. Braid It or Ponytail It Up

If you’re swimming, don’t leave your hair loose and wild (even if it looks amazing for the 'gram).

Put your hair in a braid, low ponytail, or bun to:

  • Minimize tangling and breakage

  • Protect it from sun exposure

  • Keep it from soaking up as much salt and chlorine

Bonus: It also keeps your beach waves way cuter post-swim.

3. Shield Your Hair Like You Shield Your Skin

We’re good about applying sunscreen, but your hair needs protection too.

Look for UV-protectant sprays or lightweight leave-in treatments that shield your hair from sun damage. (Need a recommendation? I’ve got some salon faves perfect for SoCal living.)

4. Rinse + Treat Immediately After Swimming

After you’re done swimming, rinse your hair with fresh water ASAP — even if you’re not shampooing right away. (but you know shampoo it right away if you can)

Then, when you get home, use a gentle, hydrating shampoo and a deep conditioner to replenish moisture and nutrients.

5. Book Your Summer Refresh

Between sun, salt, and pool chemicals, summer can take a toll on your hair’s health and your color.

A quick salon gloss, a nourishing mask treatment, or a trim to clean up dry ends can make a huge difference in keeping your hair vibrant and healthy all season.

Bottom Line

Summer hair goals? Have fun. Protect your strands. Keep your shine.

With a little extra love and a few simple habits, your hair can handle all the pool days, beach days, and endless sunshine coming your way.
